In the last several hours we have watched the events surrounding the Japanese earthquake unfold on Skynews in our cabin; first the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks and then the terrible destruction of the ensuing tsunamis across the Pacific.
We are OK aboard the Aurora as we bob around like a cork in a pond about 4,800 miles away from Japan, the wave passed us this morning at 5:30 am (+13 GMT). The seas are rough at the moment but not due to the tsunami and we would hardly feel the effects of the tsunami in 2,000 meters of water.
We are separated from the direct onslaught of the wave by the Micronesian Islands (Carolina and Marshall) and the Melanesian Island (Solomon, Vanuatu and Fiji).
For the more technical minded
Our next port of call is Apia in Western Samoa (latitude: 13° 45'South Longitude: 172° 06'West), we are about 1 day away.
We are nearer to Fiji than anywhere else. Our present position is latitude: 26°48' South Longitude: 178° 05' West at 7:44 am Saturday (18:44 GMT) For the Google addicts.
Hawaii, with a population of 1,3 million, was hit by the tsunami at about 13:07 GMT on Friday 11 March 11
Today, we cross the International Date line and we will enjoy two Saturdays. There are people on board with a birthday on this day(s).
